BayMax Dreams Shorts
(Unity/DisneyTVA)
Green light- VR artist & later concept art/art direction when we expanded it into a larger team.
(Art Direction)
On this short film project, I was the initial art director, concept artist, and additional look development unity artist.
We produced three episodes in six months with a skeleton crew of eight team members.
This was in collaboration with Disney TVA to create a world that felt like Baymax’s Dreams. It needed to be very different from the animated feature but still fit in with the TV show.
Approach:
We designed Baymax’s memory world to feel abstract yet medical with some of the scanning & medical GUI visuals from his film world.
Loose and fast designs. Iterations in the Unity engine made the turn around very fast.
With characters the client favored a cyan “Tron” style Baymax and white world look. We compromised on a more orange Baymax variation because it popped against the more muted and blue navy/cyan palette.
The initial bed bug designs were too scary and angular. The angular features which worked in the TV show translated too strongly into 3D. We softened our approach to add more whimsical trap jaw mouth and round pillow eyes. That compromise led to an approved happy medium.
Summary:
Designing is re-designing. Always keep flexibility and artistic iteration at the top of the list so the clients needs are met in a timely manner and communication is strong.
